Good Friday blessings, friends. I want to share a virtual version of the Sensory Prayer Vigil I have set up at church in observance of this holy day. While it admittedly isn’t quite the same as walking through in person, I hope the invitations and intentions will translate.

Materials (all optional)

Walking through this vigil, participants use certain items to engage their senses. Here is a list of materials and ideas for substitutions. Grab them if you have them around the house, but don’t worry if you don’t! In lieu of any of these items, your prayerful imagination will do the trick.

  • a piece of unfinished wood or a stick

  • clean sponge (substitution: clean towel)

  • red wine vinegar (substitution: any other kind of vinegar)

  • myrrh oil (substitution: olive oil or another skin-safe oil, a drop of essential oil)

  • large piece of linen (substitution: a sheet or blanket)

  • a candle

Without further ado, the Good Friday Sensory Prayer Vigil. ✨
